The eMAIL TRACKER As A Security Tool

wecando

The eMAIL TRACKER is one of those tools that sends you an email everytime someone visits your website and gives you the following information:

1) The URL of the page that was visited
2) The referrer URL from where the visitor has arrived to the web page
3) The Date and Time of the visit.
4) The Browser name that was used to visit your site.
5) The Visitor IP Address.
6) The Visitor Host Name
7) The Country, Region and City of the visitor without the need of a huge database

The above information allows the eMAIL TRACKER to be used as one powerful Website Security and Protection Advantage. By analyzing the visitor information, you can determine if someone is trying to hack your site.

If, for example, the browser name is unknown, but you have the IP address and remote host name, you can try to determine if this was a real visitor or else what is called a bad “bot”, a bot that tries to do something malicious to your site.  You will also know the country, region and city of the visitor.

If you constantly keep seeing the same IP address for your home page, then you should be suspicious, unless it is a major search engine for which you do want many visits.  By knowing the visitor IP, Country Region and City, you can Google to see if this is indeed a bad bot.

By knowing the exact date and time you can also determine when you seem to be subject to these attacks.

Once you have determined the IP address is that of a bad bot, you can block the IP from your website.  Usually you have a CPanel that helps you administer your website.  Look for something called “IP Deny Manager”.  It may be in the Security section of your CPanel.  Enter the IP address and it will be blocked from accessing your website.  You can always remove a blocked IP from the deny list.

Good search engines will visit your site on a regular basis and request a large number of pages, perhaps spread out over a period of a few days. This is the search engine being “polite” and trying not to overburden your server all at once.

Remember, you can usually spot these spiders, crawlers or robots by looking at their host name.  These often incorporate part of the search engine’s name or the company’s name.  You can also spot spiders by their agent name, what is called the browser name.  Spiders have their own names, just like browsers.

They say that “Information is Power and Money”. By knowing how to use this information, you can provide protection and security for your website.
